Indian Stand Up Comedians “Invade” Hollywood

Los Angeles, California December 22, 2007-- Indian and stand up comedy. Words one normally does not read in the same sentence, until now.

A Wrench in the Works Entertainment is proud to present the DVD release of Indian Invasion Comedy - Civilizing the West, a comedy special featuring five of the funniest Indian stand up comedians in North America.

Featuring Vidur Kapur, Rajiv Satyal, Mark Saldana, Vijai Nathan, and Dalia, Indian Invasion Comedy gives an entirely new meaning to everything from the “red dot on the forehead” to internet dating and sex. These three men and two women deliberately blow aside political correctness, while masterfully breaking down every imaginable stereotype. With no topic off-limits, the result is pure comedy: raw, revealing, and wildly entertaining.

Indian Invasion Comedy is the first DVD in history to showcase multiple Indian stand up comedians and was recorded live before a sold out audience in Hollywood, California in high-definition. The nearly two-hour DVD also includes insightful exclusive backstage interviews with the comedians.

All five comedians regularly perform in the U.S. and Canada and they have been featured in prominent comedy festivals and on national television networks.

Comedian Vidur Kapur delivers his “hilarious tirade on growing up as a gay Indian-American” to diverse audiences all over the world and he recently appeared at the prestigious Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal. In addition to his other numerous television appearances, Vidur has been featured on Steven Spielberg’s Fox Television series On the Lot, and he was recently selected as a finalist for NBC’s Standup for Diversity comedy competition.

Declared as the “best Indian…if not Asian comic in the country” by the Los Angeles Times, Mark Saldana has also performed at the Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal and at the Latino Laugh Fest.

Rajiv Satyal is currently touring the country and was named by Russell Peters as “one of only two comics to watch.” He regularly opens for such well known comedians as Dave Chappelle, Kevin Nealon, as well as Russell Peters.

Vijai Nathan has been named "one of the top ten comics in the country" by NBC's Standup for Diversity, and XM Radio has described Dalia’s quirky act as “hysterically funny off-the-wall humor.”

“The interest in ethnic stand up comedy has exploded in the last number of years,” says producer Iqbal S. Hans. “When you have live sold out acts such as The Axis of Evil, The Kims of Comedy, and Russell Peters successfully spilling over into recorded comedy specials, it’s apparent that people are hungry for this specific genre of comedy.”

“Audiences are now more than ever ready to laugh at themselves and the eccentricities within Indian culture,” says co-producer Rani Sahota Hans. “These five comedians articulate experiences relevant not only to first generation Indian immigrants, but also to second and third generations who are looking for entertainment which speaks to them.”

Vidur Kapur

"A hilarious tirade on growing up as a gay Indian-American." - DesiTalk.Com

Featured on Steven Spielberg's FOX TV show On The Lot, and with Margaret Cho & Last Comic Standing Finalist Michele Balan in MTV LOGO's "Outlaugh Festival on Wisecrack," Vidur, "the notorious Indian bad boy," has toured internationally with his unique stand up comedy show about his life as a gay Indian immigrant. He was recently selected as a NY finalist for NBC's Stand Up for
Diversity, and he is currently the headliner at the world famous Gotham Comedy Club in New York. He was also recently selected as one of the top four Asian comics to perform at the prestigious Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal. One of the original "Gurus of Comedy," Vidur has also been featured on NBC's Last Comic Standing, MTV World, LOGOTV, PBS, AVS TV, BBC Asia, and several film documentaries.

Vijai Nathan

Named as one of the top ten comics in the country. - NBC's Standup For Diversity

Described as "the leading Indian American Female Comedian," Vijai's unique perspective of growing up as a "foreigner" in America offers a new spin on dating, childhood, pop-culture, politics and racism. She has been featured on 20/20, PBS, The Oxygen Network, and the BBC. She also tours nationally with her one-woman show, “Good Girls Don’t, But Indian Girls Do,” a funny and poignant exploration of the struggle to discover, create and claim an Indian American identity.

Mark Saldana

“The best Indian…if not Asian comic in the country.” - Los Angeles Times

Praised by the Los Angeles Times as "the best Asian comic in the country," Mark is a young, brash American who rails against being Indian in today’s society and being mistaken for a terrorist while disappointing his Indian doctor mother. He has been described as "one of the top rising stars in American comedy," and recently performed at the Just For Laughs Comedy Festival. "Don’t expect turbans and curry. He’s more about hockey and drinking." Described as "Gandhi…if Gandhi drank gin and always talked about boobs," Mark has been featured on NBC's Last Comic Standing, ABC's Jimmy Kimmel, the Latino Laff Festival, and has had his comedy writing published in Harper's Weekly.

Rajiv Satyal

Opened for Russell Peters, Dave Chappelle, and Kevin Nealon in sold-out shows across the U.S.

Declared by Russell Peters as 1 of only 2 U.S.-based Indian "comics to watch," Rajiv is the small, bespectacled Indian guy from Ohio whose witty and TV-clean act covers everything from racial issues to soap bottles to his favorite topic - himself - "We all have some Rajiv in us, even if we don't want to admit it." He has repeatedly opened for Dave Chappelle, Kevin Nealon, and Russell Peters in sold-out shows across the U.S.

Dalia

“Hysterically funny off-the-wall humor!” – XM Radio

With a mother from India and a father from Scotland, Dalia sums it up in one sentence, "I'm a cheap thief." Still adjusting to life in the U.S., she regularly performs her "distinctively witty, playful and disarmingly politically incorrect" comedy in both the Vancouver and Los Angeles comedy club scenes. She recently appeared at Yuk Yuks in Vancouver, and has also appeared on TBS's Minding The Store, Bravo's My Life on the D List, and SprintTV.
