Vidur Kapur Biography

Vidur Kapur was selected as a New York finalist by NBC's "Stand Up for Diversity" initiative and performed as part of the famous New York Comedy Festival where he was described as "A comedian to remember".

After a phenomenally successful showcase at the NACA National convention, Vidur's act is being demanded by colleges all over the US and he is likely to be one of the top 3 acts booked on US college campuses for '08 -'09. Vidur was selected as one of the top four Asian comics in North America to perform at the world famous "Just for Laughs" Comedy Festival in Montreal in July 2006.

Vidur and his stand up comedy are the subject of a short film called "Laughing Out Loud A Comic Journey" by director Shalini Kantayya which was shown on Steven Spielberg's "On The Lot" on FOX television. This film was voted as the favorite film by Michael Bay, Director of Transformers and by the other contestants on the show.

He has co-starred with Margaret Cho and NBC's Last Comic Standing Finalist Michele Balan in MTV LOGO's "Outlaugh Festival on Wisecrack". This May, Vidur was featured in a Reuters Television piece around the world on " Prominent South Asians in the Media" where they are interviewing Vidur and showing clips of his stand up comedy act, along with internationally known celebrities such as Mira Nair, Director of "Monsoon Wedding" and "The Namesake", Naveen Andrews of ABC's "LOST" and "ER" and "Bend it Like Beckham's star Parminder Nagra and Suketu Mehta, the Pulitzer Prize Finalist author.

Vidur has been seen in international media and television including, NBC, CBC in Canada, NPR, TV Asia, New Delhi TV, MTV Desi and PBS's Asian America. He has toured internationally including Canada, India, the UK, Ireland, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates. Vidur was one of the original "Gurus of Comedy" in a show produced in 2003 along with Russell Peters and was nominated in the category of "Favourite South Asian Comedian" for the South Asian Media Awards, 2005.

Vidur has also been one of the comedians selected to be included in a documentary on leading comedians in America called " Making Funny", which is being filmed at New York¹s Gotham Comedy Club on July 11th.

Vidur Kapur's stand-up comedy is based on the social commentary of a one-man culture clash. A South Asian raised in a conservative upper middle class family in New Delhi, an overachiever with a degree from The London School of Economics and Ph.D. coursework from the University of Chicago, a misfit in a family focused on arranged marriages and social status, a chic urban trend-crazy gay fashion victim in West Hollywood and Manhattan, a corporate executive from blue chip international firms, an immigrant to the US and a person horrified at being mistaken for a terrorist in a post 9/11 America.

Vijai Nathan Biography

In 1997, Vijai mortified her parents by giving up a career in journalism, canceling her wedding, and becoming a stand-up comedian- and she hasn't looked back since! Her unique perspective offers a new spin on dating, childhood, pop-culture, politics and racism.

Vijai has grown into the leading Indian American Female Comedian, performing both nationally and internationally. Recent credits include: Featured at the Los Angeles Women's Theater Festival 2006 Vijai is the first and only woman to be Nominated Comedian of the Year 2005 by South Asian Media Awards. Vijai has appeared on the BBC and taped UK Comedy Channel's "The World Stands Up" in England March 2005 NBC chose Vijai as one of it's top 10 comics in the Nation for its Stand-Up for Diversity Showcase in Los Angeles, Sept. 2004. Back Stage Magazine named Vijai one of the top ten stand-up comics in 2003. Vijai was chosen as one of two comics to represent America at the Smirnoff International Comedy Festival in Cape Town, South Africa in September of 2003. TV appearances include: ABC News' 20/20, PBS, The Oxygen Network, and the BBC.

Vijai's irreverent humor springs from her experiences of growing up as a "foreigner" in America- despite the fact she was born and raised in a suburb of Washington D.C. Much of her stand-up comedy is about growing up as an Indian in America, cultural clashes with her parents, and the racism she's dealt with as a child and now as a comedian (sounds heavy- but really it's funny.) She also tours nationally with her one-woman show, "Good Girls Don't, But Indian Girls Do," a funny and poignant exploration of the struggle to discover, create and claim an Indian American identity. It's a universal show that connects with people of all races. Vijai breaks every taboo as she exposes the underbelly of an Indian American family. She takes you through growing up Indian in a Jewish community; her discovery of sex in a repressed Hindu household; and how she finds herself along the way. It's "Gandhi" meets "Pretty in Pink."

Rajiv Satyal Biography

Rajiv Satyal -- The Funny Indian Your High-Brow, Fun-Size Comedian: Rajiv Satyal is the small, bespectacled Indian guy from Ohio whose witty, universal, and TV-clean act resonates with Middle America by covering everything from racial issues to soap bottles to his favorite topic - himself. Rajiv was born and raised near Cincinnati, Ohio. Unlike most comics for whom tragedy + time = comedy, he's just a little guy with a lot to say. His childhood was a blast, given his fun-loving parents and his hysterical brothers. He became funny in 3rd grade, influenced by his uncle and a friend who insisted he'd never make laugh. His interest in entertainment was likely subliminally influenced by the hobbies of his family: his Mom, a singer; his Dad, a DJ, one brother a singer, writer, and actor; the other a sportsman and speaker; his aunt, a painter and poet; not to mention his Dad's family's making of Bollywood films.

Despite sprouting a moustache in elementary school and not breaking 100 pounds till his senior year in high school, he somehow glided through childhood without being picked-on. A friend would later comment, "Sounds like God picked on you enough." Rajiv wanted to be Class Clown, but the guy who won was on the 5-year high school plan, so he had to settle for being Class President. A dork who managed to have cool friends, his 11-year Perfect Attendance record was solely driven by not wanting to miss out on a day's worth of stories. Rajiv went to college and noticed, for Indians, the part of the form that allows you to choose your major was grayed-out to "pre-med." He finally graduated in Materials Engineering, which he figured was good for, well, material.

While in college, Rajiv dabbled in everything from politics (interning on Capitol Hill in 1999) to comedy (winning The Funniest Person in Cincinnati amateur contest). Rajiv ironically "got serious about comedy" in 2002. In June 2005, he won The Funniest Person in Cincinnati contest in the semipro/professional division on his first try. Upon graduation, he worked at the world headquarters of Procter & Gamble, in the purchasing, media, and marketing departments. He performed (and still does) at many P&G and other corporate events and had his own column in P&G's Home Made Simple newsletter, which reached 15 million US households. Occasionally, Rajiv was seen doing actual P&G work.

He has since opened for many nationally-renowned comics, including Dave Chappelle, Kevin James, and Kevin Nealon. Rajiv has opened for Russell Peters in sold-out auditoriums across the U.S.A. In fact, in December 2006, an Indian newspaper asked Russell to name "comics to watch" - he named only two in the States; Rajiv was one of them. Rajiv was often heard on various Cincinnati radio stations, seen in many local newspapers and magazines, and found onstage regularly as an MC and a Feature act at Midwest comedy clubs and colleges.

Rajiv turned 30 in March 2006, at which point he freaked out, realizing that while he had done all he could do to gain unique experiences in Ohio - from selling knives to telemarketing to being a tennis ball boy - he had still lived in OHIO his whole life. So, he packed up and moved to LA and is now a full-time comic. Rajiv is in the rare position of hoping he makes it in entertainment so he doesn't have to go back to that six-figure gig with health benefits and job security. This pocket pundit is a comedian who stands on the fringe of what is acceptable and challenges people to see a new point-of-view. You certainly don't come to Rajiv's shows to escape - you come to experience. Because he was raised when the anthem of the time for minorities was assimilation, the Indian influence had very little impact on his life. Now, he is trying to get in-touch with his roots, if for no other reason than to deliver for the Indians and non-Indians who expect him to be more "Indian" - even though he's really just an Ohioan. And to be able to explain that Indians were not involved in 9-11 - just 7-11. The act takes the audience on a journey, while conveying a key message of diversity, which helps to break down stereotypes: We're all different and we're all the same. Rajiv thinks that with each person who learns to assume the best about others, we can make the world a better place. Sound lofty? It is. Can he do it? We'll see. And in case you're wondering, he did make that 3rd grade friend laugh. So, Rajiv thinks he can do anything.

At the end of the day, he talks about what it's like to be Rajiv. And we all have some Rajiv in us, even if we don't want to admit it. You can find Rajiv acting in commercials, doing improv, on Bill Bellamy's Who's Got Jokes?, XM and Sirius Satellite Radio, co-headlining the Hindu-Muslim comedy tour "Make Chai Not War," and online.

Mark Saldana Biography

The Legacy of Mark Saldana: So what did you possibly want to know about Mark? Curious how he got into comedy? Well, Saldana had one of the most unusual starts in the business. Unlike every other comic who had "friends dare them to get onstage" or club owners "beg them to get up and do some time" or radio DJ's who "thought they were brilliant and begged them to get into comedy for the sake of the planet", Mark had absolutely nobody pushing him to get into comedy. His friends never thought he was funny, they still don't think he's funny and they're always "mysteriously busy" when invited to his shows.

Basically he's one of the only Indian comics around, and definitely the funniest. But don't expect turbans and curry. He's more about hockey and drinking.

Mark is a young, brash American who rails against being Indian in today's society and being mistaken for terrorists while disappointing his Indian doctor mother. One radio DJ referred to him as "Gandhi...if Gandhi drank gin and always talked about boobs." The LA Times called him "The best Indian...if not Asian comic in the country".

His near decade of performing in 40 states and 3 countries has gotten him featured in USA Today, Associated Press, New York Times, and his comedy writing published in Harpers Weekly. Mark made his television debut in 2004 on SiTV's "Latino Laff Festival", and also appeared on NBC's "Last Comic Standing 2" and "Girls Behaving Badly" on the Oxygen Network. This fall he will perform on ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live" I went to India, and didn't fit in with anyone because I'm chubby. I went to the beach and took off my shirt and all these kids were like "Are you from the future?"

Russell Peters Biography and Videos

Russell Peters is already a comedy superstar in much of the world. Dan Nainan Biography and Videos

As a senior engineer for Intel, Nainan traveled the world with CEO Andy Grove, demonstrating the latest technology on stage at high-profile events. As the audiences sometimes numbered in the thousands, or even into the millions on television, Nainan experienced tremendous stage fright. To attack the problem head-on, he first joined a Toastmasters group, then decided to take a stand up comedy class in San Francisco.

Nainan's first comedy performance at the Punch Line comedy club in San Francisco was a success. Upon viewing the videotape of the performance, his co-workers at Intel invited him to perform at a team dinner for 200 employees at COMDEX in Las Vegas. After that performance, he was asked to perform for 2500 employees from around the world at Intel's annual sales conference at the San Francisco Hilton. At 8 o'clock on a Monday morning, he impressed the audience with his impressions of Bill Clinton and Andy Grove. Many employees thought that he had been hired as a professional comedian for the event. In 2001, Nainan was promoted to Strategic Relations Manager for the northeastern region, based in New York City. Restless and bored in this stationary position, he left his job at Intel to pursue comedy full time.

In April 2003 Dan won an open mike contest and the opportunity open for comedian Robert Schimmel, who invited Dan to perform at his shows in Honolulu, Hawaii. Schimmel was so impressed by Nainan’s act that he asked the young comedian to tour with him as his feature act at many comedy clubs in the US.

In April 2004, Nainan happened to be visiting the grand opening of the Laugh Factory comedy club in New York and had the good fortune to be pressed into service. He was introduced by noted comedian and television personality Bob Saget, and impressed the black-tie crowd with his clean act. Saget insisted that Nainan open for him for the entire weekend.

Nainan has been seen on NBC's Last Comic Standing and Saturday Night Live as well as on Nickelodeon and A&E. He has done a variety of TV commercials and appeared on many radio stations around the US. Nainan has performed at various events for Hillary Clinton, Cherie Booth (Mrs. Tony Blair), congressman Mike Honda, Sanjay Gupta and Howard Dean. Dean Obeidallah Biography

From Dean's website: "Born in the Great State of New Jersey, my comedy comes in large part from my unique background of being the only son of a Palestinian father and a Sicilian mother. Both my parents have provided me with an enormous amount of material, usually unintentionally. I was a practicing lawyer for several years until the other lawyers I worked with suggested I perform in the New Jersey Bar Association's funniest lawyer show. I am pretty sure that was their way of telling me to find a new career. I recently had one of my proudest moments as a comic when I was awarded the first annual "Bill Hicks Spirit Award," for "thought provoking comedy" from the NY Underground Comedy Festival and the Hicks' family. The late Bill Hicks was a comedian who challenged the audience and made them actually think about political and social issues while making them laugh. My new one man show entitled, "I Come in Peace," which is a comedic and truthful look at my life as an Arab-American in the post 9/11 world, recently ran as part of the 2006 NY Fringe Festival and had a successful Off-Broadway run as well."

Mohammad’s family was persuaded that he was going to become a Doctor; however destiny had a different plan. Mohammed developed his talent in the comedy club scene. In just a few short years, he was performing in USO tours in Germany, Italy, Sicily, Japan, Korea and Bahrain. Upon returning, he was selected to perform at the Las Vegas Comedy Festival in 2004, alongside great stars as Wayne Newton and The Smothers Brothers.

But instead she chose to drive up and down the country for as little as ten pounds, staying in dirty lurid bed and breakfasts trying to make people laugh. She thought of giving up, but no Muslim man wants to marry her, now that's she's dabbled in jokes and fingered a few white men on the 38 bus.

Allah Made Me Funny DVD Info

'Allah' may build cultural bridges "Look at this stage," exclaims Muslim comic Mohammed Amer as he steps into the commodious performance space. "This is a lot of room for a Palestinian!" "Allah Made Me Funny: Live in Concert" is a showcase for Palestinian, Indian, and African American stand-up comics Amer, Azhar Usman and Preacher Moss, respectively, but it's also a popgun shot across the bow in the culture wars. "Allah" seeks to calm xenophobic concerns by showing that the issues and family foibles of Muslims are the same as anyone's. Happily, it's reasonably successful -- and remarkably clean for a stand-up concert film. Usman, his expansive presence made larger by a bushy black beard, probably has the best material of the three. He plays off his appearance ("Not many of you have ever seen someone who looks like me smile before") and eloquently rips President George W. Bush for pronouncing "terrorists" as "terrace." Moss looks primed for Hollywood with his sparkplug stature and polished delivery. He gets mileage out of his physicality and onstage personas, including an angry black weatherman and his mother, dismayed at his conversion to Islam. The interstitial glimpses of the comics' home lives are insufficient; the film would benefit from more in-depth looks offstage. But it has the potential to be culturally bridging in its way, and that makes looking for Muslim comedy in the Western world worthwhile. Download the "Allah Made Me Funny" DVD.
